OGCR (Open Geospatial Carbon Registry) is a European research & innovation initiative focused on building a transparent, open-source geospatial carbon accounting system for agricultural, forestry, and land management sectors across Europe. Its aim is to provide scientifically robust, openly accessible tools and data that support measurement, monitoring, and verification of carbon stored in soil, biomass, and peat, helping landowners, policymakers, researchers, and other stakeholders engage with carbon markets and environmental policy frameworks in a credible way.
The project is funded under the Horizon Europe programme under grant agreement 101218854.
and runs from June 2025 to June 2029. It will develop updateable baseline carbon maps, a hybrid modelling framework for evaluating land-management impacts tied to EU Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) and the Carbon Removals Certification Framework (CRCF), and a globally applicable geospatial carbon registry that facilitates participation in both voluntary and (future) mandatory carbon markets.
Key aims
- Build updateable geospatial layers for soil, biomass, and peat carbon across the EU.
- Develop tools linking EU agricultural policies and carbon accounting systems.
- Support fair carbon recognition and rewards for landholders’ climate action
